75+ Online Transcription Jobs for Beginners and Pros

Welcome to my ultimate list of transcription companies that hire beginners and pros for work-from-home positions! This list is a work in progress, so check back for updates. 😊

And while you’re on the lookout for online work, you may also be interested in checking out my recent post, 10 of the Best Part-Time Online Jobs for 2020.

Update March 7, 2024: I’m looking for part-time overflow help with academic interview transcription starting in April. Must be based in Canada or the US, have work references, flexible availability (including weekends), and be very responsive to emails. Must be able to turn around 90 minutes of 2-3 speaker audio in three days. Email chloe [at] opaltranscriptionservices.com with your experience and availability (please also add my email to your approved senders). IMPORTANT: Please paste your resume into the body of your email instead of sending it as an attachment or I will not be able to read it. More info: https://www.mondayroadmap.com/transcription-jobs/

A few things before we jump in:

  • You’ll notice that the higher-paying transcription companies require training, experience, or advanced certification. To learn how to qualify for higher-paying opportunities if you don’t have any experience, see my complete guide on how to become a transcriptionist. You’ll also learn how to find even more remote transcription opportunities than the ones I’ve listed here.
  • To work for many of the companies below, you’ll need a PC with Windows 7 or higher and a recent version of Microsoft Word. You can purchase Office 365 Home, which includes regularly updated versions of MS Word, here. If you need free transcription software, Express Scribe and The FTW Transcriber are both programs that I use and recommend. The FTW Transcriber has excellent audio quality – you can get the pro version here for 7% off. See my post on audio transcription software to compare the different features between the programs. You’ll also need a foot pedal and a good headset, preferably one that makes bad audio sound clearer.
  • The following list is comprised mainly of general and legal transcription companies. If you’re interested in becoming a legal transcriptionist, I recommend Janet Shaughnessy’s online certificate program, Legal Transcription: Theory & Practice. She also offers a general transcription training program. (I’ll be writing about medical transcription companies in a future post, so stay tuned.)
  • Just because a company is included here doesn’t mean I endorse it. All information is taken from what’s publicly available online. If you’re interested in applying to any of the companies in this list, do your own research beforehand. If any company charges you a fee to apply with them or doesn’t pay on time, don’t work for them.

Enjoy the list!

1-888-TYPE-IT-UP (formerly Verbal Fusion)

This company charges a $39 administrative fee to take their exam, which they say goes to the staff member who reviews the application. As I stated at the top of this post, I don’t recommend paying a fee to apply for a company. I’ve included the company here for reference because they’re regularly included in lists of transcription companies, likely because of the above-average pay rates listed on their site. However, I’ve never heard of anyone who’s actually worked for them. If you know anything about this company, feel free to reach out and clarify so I can update this post.

  1. Thanks so much for this list of places. I have been a medical transcriptionist for over 40 years and am now studying to transition to legal transcription (taking the course you recommended, actually). But I am going from being an expert as an MT to being a “newby” as an LT, and was lost as to where I could possibly find work while I complete my studies. Your list is a light in the dark for me. I look forward to reading more of your posts. Thanks again.

    1. Jane,

I’m so happy I could be of some help. Thank you for supporting my blog, and all the best as you embark on your legal transcription career!

  2. Just checked Type-It-Up website 09/06/2022, and they now charge $59 to test for a job doing at-home transcription for their company. To persuade you to pay it, they say it’s much less than you would pay for a new interview outfit or the gas and parking to drive in to an in-person interview. (Or you could click over to one of the other companies on the above list and test completely for free, as it should be.) –You asked for an update, Chloe. Thanks again for your so helpful list.

    1. Thanks, Jane, for this useful information! I agree with your assessment — to reiterate my thoughts above for anyone who may read this, I’d be very skeptical about a company that charges an application fee for a work-from-home job, especially when you can’t find anyone online who has actually worked for the company, as seems to be the case here.

  3. Great article! Thank you for taking your time to research this. I am a digital court reporter and have learned to do transcripts-though it is not required.
There is a lull right now with only remote as attorneys make their way back into offices. However with the landscape changing for Real Time Steno’s becoming scarce- there is a hiring increase for electronic reporters. I have wanted to expand past being a digital/electronic reporter to transcribing as well- or scoping and this is an encouraging list you have put together saving me hours!! Thank you so much!

    1. Awesome, Michelle! There really are a ton of opportunities out there for legal transcriptionists, and I don’t think we’ll see this change anytime soon (even now with all the AI tools coming onto the scene). Thanks for commenting, and all the best with landing some great transcribing contracts.
